Case ING
Charis Pattikawa, Program Manager for Managers Development & Choose Your Course, explains:
"The program is called It’s Your Move and has been running for six months now. The first groups of participants are very enthusiastic."
At ING, the role of managers and the demand for managers are evolving. In this context, the bank aims to implement a career program that encourages managers to take control of their career paths.
Intrinsically motivate managers to take action
Decide what fits best based on an assessment
Make career steps or development trajectories tangible and realistic
Take control of their own 100% customized career program
ING wants its middle managers and senior managers to reflect on what they truly want, encouraging them to take control of their careers. Because a large group of ING managers prefers to make career decisions based on facts, the bank's Program Manager for Managers Development emphasizes the importance of including an assessment as part of the program.
ING, in collaboration with GITP, developed the career program It’s Your Move. The goal is to tap into intrinsic motivation to encourage managers to take action by making the path to their next role or development direction tangible and realistic. Self-direction and mobility are central to the program. "With this program, we essentially want to say: While you are actively involved in the development of your employees, don't forget about your own development. Think about the steps you want to take. Take control; you are at the helm of your own career."
The ING program spans three months and consists of a unique combination of:
Participants work individually and in a peer group to thoroughly prepare for their next career step. Each participant takes control of their 100% customized trajectory. "This is the first time we have chosen a career program for both senior and middle managers. Thanks to the 100% customization, it works very well. The questions that both groups of managers have are essentially the same. The difference in focus areas is addressed by providing senior managers with a more experienced coach."
"We certainly don't expect every manager to make a move as a result of this career program. That’s not necessary. Someone may just as well conclude that they are in the right place and are happy with what they are currently doing. The most important aspect is that managers are prompted to reflect and actively think about what they truly want, and from there, take control of their career. The first participants are very enthusiastic."
